1.anything except for politics..

Anyway,
haw about 5 dangerous things you should let your kids do?

http://www.ted.com/talks/gever_tulley_on_5_dangerous_things_for_kids.html

1. play with fire..
2. own a pocket knife..
3. throw a spear..
4. de-construct appliances
5. a.break the DMCA(Digital Millennium Copyright Act)
b.drive a car

6. This one is mine.. It ain't dangerous..But it is something You can do for your kids.. Touch them. talk to them... Spend time with them... You had em.. Take off that stupid damn dog leash that you lead them around on and HOLD THEIR HAND like a normal parent...
Spend time with them.. YOU had them.. You are responsible for them.. Do something fun.. Do something boring... But damnit.. DO Something!!

/I just watched a news story about a local woman bitching about school being canceled because now she has to call of work or hire someone to watch her kids...
WHAT? You had em.. Why do us tax payers have to watch them.. That is not what school is all about.... This is that stupid idea of :it takes a village to raise a child" thinking... No it does NOT... It takes a parent... Mom and dad...
Not 2 dads or 2 moms...

I have done some of the dangerous things this guy is talking about in the video... I didn't let my son use the chainsaw at 8 like he wanted, but as he got older, I let him use things that I didn't tell his mother about.. And I have done the same thing for my daughter.. I just don't let her drive my truck anymore after she almost ran me over when she was 12... I should have been on the inside with her I guess...

1) My kids don't play with fire (that I know of) because we've always let them do things like light the candles on cakes, or start the fire in the campfire ring outside..

2) We got Zach a really nice swiss army knife with a matching leather pouch for his 13th birthday. He wears it on his belt every day. He will not part with that knife.

3) If you have a pocket knife, you will make spears. That's just a natural progression. He knows better to throw them at anything living.

4) That has always been in my family blood. I did it when I was a kid, now Zach does it. Old appliances such as computers, dishwasher, TV, etc., to take apart. My dad was a TV repairman, and I used to tear TVs apart all the time.

5) huh? You mean like pirating?

6) I can't agree with you more. We have always done that. We try to be a close family.

No, I wouldn't let my kids use a chainsaw, though Zach got to use the weed whacker this summer. My daughter got ahold of a hatchet and nearly chopped her foot off. There was blood everywhere, and we had to rush her to the emergency room and explain how an 11 year old was playing with a hatchet. Fortunately it only took a few stitches and the wound was just on the surface. But she needed new sneakers. Driving a car- not yet. We let them go out early and start the car. But my wife was just saying how nice it would be to let Zach move the car up a bit in the driveway (my dad was snowblowing for us- I'm too weak to do stuff like that yet).

We found it helpful to let the kids play on the highway median; they developed fine instincts for survival.

About the only thing we wouldn't let our kids do on this list, was, we never gave them a pocket knife (the little vermim would use them to dig an escape tunnel) or play with fire (well, OK after the first two dogs turned up roasted we didn't let them play with fire).

As it turns out my son is one of those idiot genius types; he can take an appliance apart faster that you can say IT'S STILL UNDER WARRANTY. Thats the genius part. The idiot part is he can't put them back together without hurting or killing himself, his sister, or the family pet of the day.

I got a pocket knife when I was a kid.. Probably 7 or 8... And I never needed stitches till after I was married...
My pocket knife had the two blades... I could throw it and stick it in the picnic table.. Actually, if you dropped it,
it would just stick in the table.. My dad always taught me to keep it sharp.. That way you don't force it and cut yourself...
I had a big bowie knife too.. Cept that was just for fishing.. I had to keep it in the tackle box..

#5? pirating?
not exactly.. I listened to his explanation in the video... I still just buy my music or movies on the disks and that's it.. I don't make copies for my friends.. I don't rip it to the computer so I can watch it or listen to it any time I want on a smaller screen..

And my taking stuff apart?
Maybe not so much apliances or computers or cars,
I like taking houses apart and fixing them..

I don't let the kids take things apart so much. But I do. I have learned that just about anything that someone put together at one point in time is repairable if the cost of the repair parts are feasible.

If anyone ever has a lcd computer monitor or tv die on them, and if you own any they will, hit me up and i can help ya out on how to fix it.

Now if someone could tell me how to make my washing machine stop twisting to about a 30% turn when the spin cycle stops i could use that advice. I have thought about putting some rubber or something under the feet but have not done so yet. FYI it sits on a ceramic tile floor but up till recently it never moved like this.

I never had that problem before and mine sits on tile too..
It is enclosed on 3 sides so it can't move..
A wall to the right and a wall behind it and the dryer on the left...
Maybe get one of those front loaders?
They are better on water usage... I have been thinking about getting one myself..

Our eldest is 1400 days today...he can't have his own pocket knife until he's 1500 days Smile Or at least until he can sit quietly without spilling over the five-dollar lemonade at Disneyland.

The time for children to try something is when they ask and when they can show the maturity and responsibility to handle it. They may not be able to do it the first time, so re-introduce it.

We tried playing Wii with our oldest, but he just can't seem to stand up and handle it. On the other hand, he loves Nick Jr. on-line and can sit for an hour, no problem.

By the way, he loves the can of Lysol and the Bic Lighter we gave him for Valentine's Day...we told him to go burn the spider webs in the garage.

LOL.......

Sometimes I act like I am only 2920 days old,
and I have never tried to get ride of spider webs like that...
I did something similar once when I was taking out our old leaky gas line.. I was out of Lysol.. I used a Zaw-saw to cut away the old gas line... The fireball that went through the basement took care of most of the cobwebs in under 5 seconds..

See Milkman, I just figured out why you get to help plan your daughter's wedding......if you get bored you do stuff like take a zaw saw to a gas line...........just to see how the spiders react.

I wasn't allowed to help plan my daughters wedding cause I would have been trying to figure out how to aim the gas pipe before I started whacking away..........
